• Karin Power, former state representative;
• Vivian Satterfield, chief sustainability officer, Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability;
• Jules Bailey, president and CEO, Oregon Beverage Recycling Cooperative.

Kristen Connor, senior vice president and community impact officer at Heritage Bank, moderated the discussion.

The panel discussion ran for a little more than an hour, with topics ranging from the urban-rural divide, finding reasons for optimism amid political gridlock — and how New Jersey residents feel about New York City.

On the importance of awards like the 100 Best Green Workplaces: “It’s been a really challenging time all around, not just in sustainability. It’s from the pandemic, from social issues happening. We’ve had a number of opportunities to rise to the occasion of the challenges that we face. Sometimes those competing priorities become a bit overwhelming in sustainability, I think sometimes can get a little lost in the focus of that. So congratulations to the organizations in this room whose employees feel that what your companies are doing are meaningful, and that they feel like they’re important, and they feel like they’re engaged in those because I think that that’s a huge success and a win for you.” – Kristen Connor

“I think there’s a time disconnect between government and business, which is why it’s so important to have awards like these, frankly — so that you have markers to hold your business up to in cohorts together. It really matters for employees to take pride in more than what they produce or do but how they come together, and the kind of community you create each of your organizations.” – Karin Power

On elevating sustainability in the current moment: “We’ve got a lot of competing pressures on us, from government and the economy and health care, the pandemic and all these different things; it’s easy to kind of have sustainability down a notch always. But you know, the secret is, it’s always been that way. I remember 14, 15 years ago, when I first ran for office, and I was knocking on doors and in inner Southeast Portland, and if there was ever a neighborhood that cared about sustainability, it’s there…What I heard from people was, they were worried about their kids’ education, they were worried about the economy and where their job were going. They were worried about how they were going to pay the bills. And yeah, they were worried about sustainability and environment. But it wasn’t necessarily, if you ask them about it, top of mind, they’re like their highest concern on kind of their individual Maslow’s hierarchy. I think that that’s true across the economy, as well. I think everybody acknowledges that it’s really important, it just always ends up getting a little bit second billing. Part of the solution to that is, there has to be a, a vision of sustainability, that, that meets people’s needs where they are, and shows people that it’s actually part of the fundamental underpinning of everything else, as opposed to being something separate.” – Jules Bailey

On the relationship between environmental justice, economic justice and racial justice: “I grew up with lead paint on my walls and lead pipes in the water, and those weren’t replaced until I had already developed and grown in my life. So there is no ability to silo economic justice, from environmental justice from racial justice, and I have always strived my work to work in the sweet spot of those the intersection of those three things. When we think about how to elevate issues of sustainability and elevate the issues of the environment for the most impacted communities it’s what’s right in front of you: the ability to afford food and dignity and being able to have access to opportunity. Underlying that, it’s all these other things. So I think the ability to work in the diversity of all these different issues is making impact towards this overarching goals sustainability. And when things get tough — I just want to acknowledge that we’ve already done a lot of the big-ticket items, so now we are working on the toughest shit, truly. It is going to be hard because this is complicated. It is not straightforward.” – Vivian Satterfield

On each of those surveys, employees were asked to rate their satisfaction with — and the importance they attach to — 11 statements related to their workplace’s practices. These include the organization’s green mission and goals, but also practices like recycling and waste reduction, as well as support for public transportation. Employers were also asked about their organization’s policies and practices, as well as how they measure compliance — and what day-to-day practices they engage in, such as water conservation and support for sustainable vendors.

For the 100 Best Green Companies, Sustainable Practices questions were incorporated into both the 100 Best Nonprofits survey, conducted April-June and the 100 Best Companies survey, conducted August-November. More than 15,000 employees will take part in these two surveys.

SCORING

Employee ratings on satisfaction with and importance of sustainable practices for 11 survey statements count for 2/3 of each workplace’s overall green score while 15 sustainable practice questions answered by the employer count for the remaining 1/3 out of 300 possible points.

GREEN EMPLOYEE SURVEY QUESTIONS

For each statement below, employees rate:
• Satisfaction with the performance of their company/organization in that area.
• How important that particular item is to their overall satisfaction.

1. Sustainability as part of the company/organization’s mission
2. Rewards and recognition of employee efforts toward sustainability goals
3. Measurement of progress toward sustainability and sharing of results
4. Workplace recycling of paper, glass, metals, packaging and other materials
5. Conservation of water, such as low-flow plumbing fixtures and native-plant landscaping
6. Waste reduction, such as composting, reuse of materials, and minimal packaging
7. Efforts to use use non-toxic, natural materials
8. Support for travel alternatives such as public transit, carpools, telecommuting, walking and bicycling
9. Workplace practice of energy conservation, such as turning off unused equipment and use of compact- fluorescent/LED bulbs and high efficiency appliances

HISTORY

Sustainability is an important value and sustainable industries are acritical sector in Oregon. And green practices also are key to being a great place to work. To honor that, Oregon Business launched its first annual 100 Best Green Companies project in 2009 and developed survey questions in partnership with The Natural Step USA.

Business leaders who want to make change have to get comfortable being uncomfortable.

That was one of the takeaways from Tuesday’s panel discussion on corporate social responsibility, which immediately preceded the presentation of awards to attendees who ranked on Oregon Business’ list of 100 Best Green Workplaces. The panel discussion and following ceremony were sponsored in part by Heritage Bank.

The event, which took place at Portland Center Stage at The Armory in downtown Portland, was OB’s first in-person event since the March 2020 100 Best Companies to Work For in Oregon, which immediately preceded statewide COVID-19 restrictions on indoor gatherings. Refreshments were served during the morning reception.

Kristen Connor, Heritage Bank’s senior vice president and community impact officer, moderated a discussion with Alando Simpson, the CEO of COR; Michael Colgrove, executive director of Energy Trust of Oregon; and Marguerite Merritt, the marketing manager and “cheese emissary” for Rogue Creamery, which ranked first on this year’s list.

Other takeaways:

• Simpson stressed the difficulty of disrupting an industry where “you have to work with all the people you’re trying to disrupt,” along with the need to embrace discomfort.
• Colgrove talked about how the clean-energy industry has failed communities of color, and how his organization is trying to correct course.
• Merritt revealed that Rogue Creamery formed a “crisis team” at the beginning of the pandemic, which reviewed the latest news every morning and strategized, and donated 500 pounds of cheddar each week to local food banks to help struggling community members.

This week our 2020 100 Best Green Workplaces in Oregon list went live. The annual roster showcases companies and nonprofits that are at the top of their game in implementing green workplace practices.

Many are asking how employers can continue to practice sustainability in a new business environment that encourages remote working and physical distancing.

But experts say the upheaval is an ideal time to reboot workplace systems to put them on a greener footing. Sustainability is equated with health and wellness, critical elements of getting the economy up and running.

Justin Zeulner, executive director of The Wave, a new coalition of Northwest businesses that have pledged to address sustainability challenges, says the focus on health and wellness as a means of recovering from the pandemic — such as improving air and water quality, and purchasing from local suppliers — has been part of environmentalists’ discourse for decades.

“When those in the environmental movement say we want to reopen in a healthier environment that minimizes environmental impact, that is directly connected to health and wellness,” says Zeulner.

“Health has not been part of the dialogue on sustainability,” says Megan Shuler, program manager for the City of Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability. “As we reopen, sustainability will not be just about operational efficiencies, it will also be about public health.”

Members of The Wave coalition include zoos, aquariums, science and technology centers, hotels, restaurants, universities, airports, and convention centers. One area they are focusing on is the need for businesses to support the local food sector. The group’s members buy food at a high rate, and they have discovered how the pandemic has exposed inefficiencies of relying on the global food supply chain.

“The pandemic has highlighted that there is not a system of local food,” says Zeulner. “At a system level, we are looking at how to enable staff to support the local system.”

Those organizations in the 100 Best Green Workplaces are already familiar with sustainable practices, making the transition to recovering from the pandemic smoother than for those employers that have taken no steps.

Many green workplaces, for example, have already made efficiency improvements to buildings and operations that will also help protect the health of employees. Greener office buildings that have improved air-filtration systems that eliminate particulate matter, for example, improve both health and the environment.

“It is now more important than ever for buildings to adopt a sustainable framework that is part of a health and wellness strategy,” says Elaine Aye, associate at RWDI, a consulting firm. “With COVID-19 you have an opportunity to lean on sustainability. The pandemic has put a focus on environmental justice.”

Businesses focused on cutting costs because of the economic fallout from the lockdown may cause more organizations to shun costly environmental upgrades. But experts point out that reducing energy and waste saves businesses money in the long run.

“People will have to be more efficient and less wasteful. By being more resourceful, it will reduce costs for businesses,” says Aye.

She points out that building design of the future will focus on using technology that monitors employee health, such as tracking occupants’ temperatures, as well as energy consumption. “The technology will force us to be aware of a building’s performance,” says Aye.

Remote working is also putting renewed focus on the possibility for businesses to reduce emissions caused by business travel and commuting. “We have the opportunity to think about the environmental impact of travel,” says Zeulner. The pandemic shows “we can travel less. We don’t always have to come into work.”

As the 100 Best Green Workplaces in Oregon return to work, the focus on employee health and wellness will not be a big leap.

“These green businesses are well positioned for economic recovery,” says Shuler.

Congratulations to the companies and nonprofits on the 2020 100 Best Green Workplaces in Oregon list. This year’s Best Green workplaces were determined by 357 companies and nonprofits that took part in two anonymous surveys: the 2019 100 Best Nonprofits to Work For in Oregon and the 2020 100 Best Companies to Work For in Oregon.

Employees rated their satisfaction with and the importance they attach to 11 statements related to workplace sustainable practices, such as green mission and goals, recycling and waste reduction, support for public transit, energy and water conservation, and buying local.

Employers were also independently scored on 15 questions about their sustainability practices.
